PLAYWRIGHTS THEATER

Playwrights Theater was founded in 1997 by a group of playwrights to provide themselves and other playwrights opportunities and assistance for the development of their plays from concept through production.

Our move to a totally electronic competition is an effort to utilize the Internet to best advantage. In like manner, we are re-examining the way we support play development. Our thought is to continue providing individualized instruction in the Dallas area. This effort will be undertaken by John Navarro. We are partnering with the Festival of Independent Theaters to provide a superior play development program to meet the needs of our local talent. Please revisit our website to learn more about this new endeavor.

At the same time, we believe there exists the real possibility of matching promising talent outside of the Dallas area with a guiding mentor using the Internet. Jack Marshall is spearheading this project. We hope to launch that initiative in the Spring of 2005. Participation is open to any person who can demonstrate a serious interest in and committment to writing for the theater, from someone trying to write their first play to the produced playwright.

We believe that the play--and its architect, the playwright--is the foundation of theater. We are self-supporting. We do not receive nor have we sought grants, public or corporate. We are not adverse to receiving money, but we prefer the freedom of artistic decision. We are incorporated in the State of Texas and have been recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) organization. So your donation to support our work is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Your support, whether it be reading for our competition, volunteering back stage or front of the house, in-kind services, or financial is greatly appreciated.
